Oral Medicine
Oral medicine is the comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management of all oral disorders. These diseases may be found only in the mouth or may be found anywhere in the body and present in the mouth.
Oral medicine management includes diagnostic biopsies, small excisions, therapeutic injections, and other minor surgical interventions. In many cases, conditions are managed medically with the use of topical and systemic medications.
At Cape Periodontal Specialists, we utilise the latest oral medicine techniques to keep your mouth healthy and to prevent oral diseases.
Oral cancer screening
We perform this examination to look for signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions. The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure. In most cases, we perform an examination of your mouth, and if necessary, we use additional tests to identify abnormal cells in your mouth.
Biopsy of soft tissue lesions
During a soft tissue biopsy, we remove a sample of tissue from your oral cavity. The sample is sent to a laboratory for testing. The biopsy is used to diagnose the causes of abnormal lesions in the mouth. These causes can include oral cancer and noncancerous growths or lesions.
Management of autoimmune diseases in the mouth
Autoimmune diseases are caused by a reaction of an individual's immune system to the organs or tissues of the person's own body. Some of these diseases have a negative impact on oral health and affect the oral cavity. We are concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases such as oral lichen planus, mucous membrane pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris.
