Periapical dental infection management

What is a periapical infection?

A periapical infection is an infection at the tip of the tooth. A periapical infection usually occurs as a result of prior dental work, an injury or an untreated dental cavity. It can be symptomatic and associated with pain and discomfort or present with no symptoms at all.

Apicoectomy

We treat periapical infections with a procedure called an apicoectomy. An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes the apex, or very tip, of the tooth’s root. The goal of treatment is to remove infection and preserve the tooth. During the procedure, local anaesthesia is used to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

Recovery after an apicoectomy

Many patients are able to continue normal activities the following day. You may experience some discomfort and swelling as you heal. Make sure you follow all postoperative instructions – including diet and brushing advice.

Call us immediately if your pain doesn’t respond to medication or recovery instructions.
